A recently published study has examined the effects of overeating (1,000 extra calories per day) on fat mass accumulation and lean mass accumulation, while on a low, moderate, or high protein diet. This isn’t going to be a surprise to bodybuilders anywhere, but although each group managed to gain quite a bit of fat (they weren’t training), the high protein group gained about 7 lbs of lean mass. Not too bad without any training huh?

Effect of Dietary Protein Content on Weight Gain, Energy Expenditure, and Body Composition During Overeating

A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Context The role of diet composition in response to overeating and energy dissipation in humans is unclear.

Objective To evaluate the effects of overconsumption of low, normal, and high protein diets on weight gain, energy expenditure, and body composition.

Design, Setting, and Participants A single-blind, randomized controlled trial of 25 US healthy, weight-stable male and female volunteers, aged 18 to 35 years with a body mass index between 19 and 30. The first participant was admitted to the inpatient metabolic unit in June 2005 and the last in October 2007.

Intervention After consuming a weight-stabilizing diet for 13 to 25 days, participants were randomized to diets containing 5% of energy from protein (low protein), 15% (normal protein), or 25% (high protein), which they were overfed during the last 8 weeks of their 10- to 12-week stay in the inpatient metabolic unit. Compared with energy intake during the weight stabilization period, the protein diets provided approximately 40% more energy intake, which corresponds to 954 kcal/d (95% CI, 884-1022 kcal/d).

Main Outcome Measures Body composition was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry biweekly, resting energy expenditure was measured weekly by ventilated hood, and total energy expenditure by doubly labeled water prior to the overeating and weight stabilization periods and at weeks 7 to 8.

Results Overeating produced significantly less weight gain in the low protein diet group (3.16 kg; 95% CI, 1.88-4.44 kg) compared with the normal protein diet group (6.05 kg; 95% CI, 4.84-7.26 kg) or the high protein diet group (6.51 kg; 95% CI, 5.23-7.79 kg) (P = .002). Body fat increased similarly in all 3 protein diet groups and represented 50% to more than 90% of the excess stored calories. Resting energy expenditure, total energy expenditure, and body protein did not increase during overfeeding with the low protein diet. In contrast, resting energy expenditure (normal protein diet: 160 kcal/d [95% CI, 102-218 kcal/d]; high protein diet: 227 kcal/d [95% CI, 165-289 kcal/d]) and body protein (lean body mass) (normal protein diet: 2.87 kg [95% CI, 2.11-3.62 kg]; high protein diet: 3.18 kg [95% CI, 2.37-3.98 kg]) increased significantly with the normal and high protein diets.

Conclusions Among persons living in a controlled setting, calories alone account for the increase in fat; protein affected energy expenditure and storage of lean body mass, but not body fat storage.

Hey guys – when you have a great product, you don’t need to resort to illegal hacking and other dirty tactics to sell it. Here’s a Fox News article about Progenex: a protein powder marketed towards the Crossfit community, that got caught using a hacker to make themselves look better online, and remove negative comments about them from the ‘net.

“Consider the case of Darren Meade, who in 2010 was working as interim CEO at a California-based company. In an effort to address a number of negative comments (about both himself and his company [Progenex]) posted online…he discovered the company wanted to sell illegal hacker code to scrub negative comments from the web…”

Excerpt – this part is especially heinous and disgusting – it’s Adam Zuckerman, the owner of Progenex, talking about how he wants to use his hacking program to extort parents:

“I would love to run an underground campaign that says, ‘Google is trying to destroy your reputation,’” an executive on the call is heard saying. “I like the idea of, ‘the more popular you are, the more dangerous it is,’ and giving people the scare tactic of, ‘the more exposure you have … the faster it is for your enemies to attack you.’”

“I think there’s a whole other campaign where we can break the parents,” the executive continued. “Send them a picture of their kid with a gun in his mouth — Google did it. ‘Little Johnny is going to commit Google-cide. Can you stop it?’”

Is Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Really Better Than Standard Whey Protein

Studies have shown that insulin and also the incretin hormone also known as glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) as well as cholecystokinin (CKK) had a greater response in humans which was significantly affected by the consumption of whey protein. Whey protein has been documented to have decreases in ghrelin while increasing statiety by at least 10 percent. The increase in statiety makes perfect sense because GLP-1 is a hormone involved in the process of signaling the HPTA for hunger control. In a short sentence; whey protein not only increases lean body mass but also increases the body’s fat loss. (Appetite. 2009 Apr;52(2):388-95. Epub 2008 Dec 3.)

What is whey protein?

We all know what whey protein taste like but some of us may not exactly know how it is that whey is actually synthesized. Whey protein consists of a mixture of sphere shape proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created is a result from the left overs of cheese production. Whey is left over when milk thickens and contains everything that is soluble from milk. It is around a 5% solution of lactose in water, with some minerals, lactalbumin and other peptides.  The lactose is removed after the cheese is processed. The fat from the whey is removed and then is processed for human foods. When preparing whey protein, the pasteruzing process can denature (destroy protein structure) protein due to the heat, any temperature exceeding 72 celcius is usually enough to be detrimental to the structure of proteins. It absorbs faster than regular protein from food source such as chicken, eggs, beef, etc. Whey protein is loaded with branched chain amino acids (BCAA) making it a great supplement for athletes of all types. Leucine is the building block for anabolism of the BCAA’s which will enhance the effects of whey protein considerably. While further research does need to be conducted, whey protein has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, pro immune system effects that mainly come from the fact that whey protein contains cysteine.  Cysteine is an amino acid that can be used for the production of glutathione.  Glutathione protects the body from free radical damage so in essence, it’s the body’s own anti-oxidant at the cellular levels.

What is hydrolyzed protein?

Hydrolyzed whey protein also known as whey protein hydrolysate is produced by using enzymes that are pre-digested, another method is to cut the whey protein into small chunks referred to as peptides. The two most important peptides are the di and tri peptides for building muscle and restoring muscle tissue. Basically the main difference regular whey and hydrolyzed whey protein is that with WPH the protein gets digested easier and faster because of its predigested state. This was the main reason doctors developed it for a baby formulas so that babies could drink the milk if they were having digestive issues with standard milk from bovine.  The main reason why WPH is inferior to regular whey is that hydrolyzed whey contains a bunch of different protein fragments, while standard whey has protein coming from the same source ensuring that the protein provides all beneficial peptides for proper recovery and muscle hypertrophy.  A prevalent problem with hydrolyzed whey protein is its increased chances of triggering allergies in those sensitive to those specific peptides. In theory, the process of slitting the protein to create the pre digested proteins may also denature the proteins; this of course will destroy the benefits of consuming the whey in the first place.

Continuous Studies showing Whey to superior to Hydrolyzed

Methods and results: Addition of intact proteins to STC-1 cells exerted strong effects on secretion of satiety hormones. Casein, whey, and pea showed strongest effects on CCK release, whereas casein, codfish, egg, and wheat showed most pronounced effects on GLP-1 release. Egg-hydrolysate stimulated release of CCK and GLP-1, whereas all other tested hydrolysates and synthetic-peptides showed no significant effects on hormone release. Addition of a combination of trypsin and casein-hydrolysate, codfish, egg, egg-hydrolysate, sodium-casein, wheat-hydrolysate, or wheat resulted in additional stimulation of CCK release, compared to only the protein. Addition of a combination of DPP-IV and egg-hydrolysate, ovomucoid, or sodium-casein decreased GLP-1 levels.

Conclusion: This study showed that specific intact, or partially digested proteins, in contrast to protein-hydrolysates and synthetic-peptides, stimulated hormone release. We conclude that intact proteins exert strong effects on satiety hormone release, and may therefore provide potent dietary supplements for prevention or treatment of obesity.

Fifty-six previously trained men were randomly broken up into groups receiving either: high quality whey hydrolysate, an 80% whey protein concentrate, placebo (carbohydrate), or whey enriched with lactoferrin. The men were tested for maximal strength in the bench press and hack squat, as well as muscular endurance, measured by doing a max-rep set with 80% of their 1RM.
On average, men taking the less expensive 80% concentrate (WPC80) gained more absolute strength and more muscular endurance compared to subjects taking the high-quality hydrolyzed whey (WPH). However, Whey protein hydrolysate appears to significantly augment lipolysis and may increase nitrogen retention. (Lockwoody study)

Whey Protein has also been documented for improving personal resistance training

Eight resistance-trained subjects (five men and three women) participated in a double-blind two-trial crossover design, where REE and RER were measured (7:00 a.m.) on four consecutive days. On the second day of trial 1, subjects consumed 376 kJ of either PRO (18 g of whey protein, 2 g of carbohydrate, 1.5 g of fat) or CHO (1 g of whey protein, 19 g of carbohydrate, 1 g of fat) 20 min before a single bout of HRT (nine exercises, 4 sets, 70%-75% 1-repetition maximum). REE and RER were measured 24 and 48 h after HRT. During trial 2, the same protocol was followed except subjects consumed the second supplement before HRT.

RESULTS:

Compared with baseline, REE was elevated significantly in both CHO and PRO at 24 and 48 h after HRT (P < 0.05). At 24 h after HRT, REE in response to PRO was significantly greater compared with CHO (P < 0.05). RER decreased significantly in both CHO and PRO at 24 h after HRT compared with baseline (P < 0.05). No differences were observed in total energy intake, macronutrient intake, or HRT volume (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS:

Timing PRO before HRT may be a simple and effective strategy to increase energy expenditure by elevating REE the day after HRT. Increasing REE could facilitate reductions in body fat mass and improve body composition if nutritional intake is stable. (Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2010 May;42(5):998-1003.)

Another study done showing its effects on performance when missing from the equation clearly demonstrated that whey protein increases strength dramatically. When not ingesting it, performance did suffer.

The effects of timed ingestion of high-quality protein before and after resistance exercise are not well known. In this study, young men were randomized to protein (n = 11), placebo (n = 10) and control (n = 10) groups. Muscle cross-sectional area by MRI and muscle forces were analyzed before and after 21 weeks of either heavy resistance training (RT) or control period. Muscle biopsies were taken before, and 1 and 48 h after 5 x 10 repetition leg press exercise (RE) as well as 21 weeks after RT. Protein (15 g of whey both before and after exercise) or non-energetic placebo were provided to subjects in the context of both single RE bout (acute responses) as well as each RE workout twice a week throughout the 21-week-RT. Protein intake increased (P < or = 0.05) RT-induced muscle cross-sectional area enlargement and cell-cycle kinase cdk2 mRNA expression in the vastus lateralis muscle suggesting higher proliferating cell activation response with protein supplementation. Moreover, protein intake seemed to prevent 1 h post-RE decrease in myostatin and myogenin mRNA expression but did not affect activin receptor IIb, p21, FLRG, MAFbx or MyoD expression. In conclusion, protein intake close to resistance exercise workout may alter mRNA expression in a manner advantageous for muscle hypertrophy.

The only proven form of Hydrolyzed whey protein is PeptoPro

One study done had 20 athletes had to perform twice a 45 min run on a treadmill at 75% VO2 max. They were divided into 2 groups (n=10) and both groups get drinks with PeptoPro (group A2 and B1) and with whey (group A1 and B2). In the second run the groups changed and received the other drink than in the first run (cross over design). The runners received every 10 min 100 ml of one of the drinks which were served in a simple packaging. The PeptoPro drink contained 17.5 g of the peptide mix PeptoPro were as the other drink contained 20 g of intact whey protein. Both protein based drinks were sold as recovery drinks to consume right after exercise. The whey protein recovery drink was also labeled with the claim that the protein drink could be used prior to exercise. Both protein drinks were consumed during the post-exercise recovery period after a performance test. Performance in the exercise bout after consuming the test drinks was investigated. Both groups of athletes made the PeptoPro drink a sign with PeptoPro much better as the whey recovery drink. The PeptoPro drink caused absolutely no subjectively felt negative effects on digestion which was not expected to begin with. It seems that peptides drinks like the PeptoPro drink could be used during exercises, between competitions, and training sessions. They are definitely preferred over any other whey protein recovery drinks. Another study displayed that PeptoPro drink reduced gastric emptying by 12% although the peptides are very small and fast absorbed which limits the chance of GI distress from consuming it. Since PeptoPro contains the highest amount of di and tri peptides, it’s safe to say that this protein is best consumed when one is need of rapid digesting and acting proteins.

As you can see protein consumption is a must pre and post workout whether it be on a fasted stomach or the end of the day because it stimulates both protein synthesis and nitrogen retention. Based on what I have gathered, whey protein is ideal for preworkout purposes, can be a part of your breakfast and be part of a mix with casein for intra/post workout purposes. PeptoPro would be the way to go for post workout purposes according to research due to its rapid absorption and efficacy.

From what I have gathered you are better off just consuming your standard whey protein than these fancy whey protein hydrolysates. Only if you can afford the extra cost of PeptoPro will I recommend you purchasing it for post workout purposes. I am sure I do not have to write more to convery you the reader that logic tells us whey protein is cheaper and more effective. As they say, “ If ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Low testosterone isn’t just bad for your sex life - The University of Mississippi Medical Center has recently published an article citing low testosterone as a potential cause for heart disease and other cardiometabolic risks, like Metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and type 2 diabetes. So if you’re on testosterone replacement therapy, or any other kind of androgen use, we recommend using N2Guard. N2Guard is our all-in-one health supplement designed specifically to guard steroid users against side effects.

Drink enough water: A 2008 study performed at Cal Tech demonstrated that fat cells with a good water supply can more effectively and efficiently release fatty acids more easily into the bloodstream. Therefore, adequate intracellular water helps the body use more fat and less protein.

Keep estrogen levels low: A group of test subjects taking an aromatase inhibitor (which lowers estrogen) for two years were compared to a control group that had taken nothing. The group with the lowered estrogen had built more muscle and lost more fat than the other group without training. Translation? Make sure to use your Phytoserms-347!

Testosterone helps estrogen protect the heart: A recent study from the Physiology Department of XuZhou Medical College in China, studied ovariectomized rats and found that testosterone enhances estradiol’s cardioprotection, and furthermore, that an estradiol and testosterone combination was more effective than either alone. The study gives us good reason to think that a low dose of testosterone might be warranted to protect against cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women.

N2 Burnthe only fat burner you’ll ever need!

Ever take a fat burner and then sit around waiting to “feel” something? Ever get jittery from as thermogenic only to crash two hours later? Or take the latest-greatest fat burner and not lose an ounce of fat? Those days are over now that N2Burn is here!  Our new formula contains ingredients proven to:

  • Destroy body fat
  • Build muscle
  • Boost metabolism
  • Improve thyroid function
  • Turbo charge energy levels
  • Enhance nutrient absorption

First let’s back up a bit…

You may have noticed that there’s never been a fat burner under the Need To Build Muscle name before. We’ve jumped in the ring with a product in every other category, from creatine to carbs to preworkout formulas, but we’ve never released our own premium fat burner until now. The reason for that is simple: We wanted to make sure we got it right the first time. Plenty of good companies have come out with really great proteins, preworkout formulas, and test boosters, but fallen flat on their faces when it came time to put out a really great fat burner.

Of course, the same can be said about any category, but the fat burner market is probably the most competitive one (think about it: it’s one of the only nutritional categories that you see television commercials for). So we knew that we needed to bring out A-game before we put our name on the product.

We knew we could formulate a great fat burner, and put tons of potent, high-quality ingredients into a capsule, but part of the problem is the capsule itself! Drop a capsule in a glass of water and what happens? After a few minutes, it dumps all of the ingredients into the glass at the same time. This is what causes that huge stimulant rush followed by a severe crash that you find with most fat burners.

That’s why we decided to use a time-release tablet (not a capsule, but an actual tablet). But we didn’t stop there – the coating on the capsule itself is thermogenic, and you’ll feel it working as soon as you take it – the coating is Cinnamaldehyde, a potent appetite suppressant and insulin regulator.

This way, N2Burn starts working as soon as it hits your tongue, and continues working throughout the day, because of our special time-release tablet and formula. We’ve designed this product to work alone as your only fat burner (2-3 tablets no more than 3x/day), but also to be used with a less complete, or faster-acting, formula (1 tablet along with your regular thermogenic).

In other words, maybe you crash after a couple of hours on your favorite fat burner – take one capsule of N2Burn with your current product, and you’ll enjoy a longer acting stimulant effect, thanks to our caffeine-amplifying and extending ingredients. Or maybe you still have stubborn bodyfat in the abdomen (guys) or legs (women)…N2Burn contains a special blend of yohimbe and Alpha-yohimbe that will target those areas. So even if you’ve already found a fat burner you like, you can use a single cap of N2Burn and turbo boost its effects!

The key here is the synergy between our ingredients. We built this formula from the ground up, to give you the best possible results, using only the highest-quality, scientifically-proven ingredients:

N2X (Caffeine) blend:

First we started with caffeine – a xanthine, and probably the most widely consumed fat loss agent in the world; whether it’s in your morning coffee or your fat burner, it’s been shown in studies – too many to even start mentioning – to burn fat through several mechanisms. It aids the muscle’s ability to contract, increases mental focus and clarity (blocking adenosine receptors) and it helps liberate and mobilize fatty acids for use as fuel instead of carbs and protein.

Caffeine is so important that we see it in nearly every fat burner on the market, and that’s because it not only elevates your resting metabolic rate – the degree to which your body burns calories while at rest – but it also boosts the amount of calories you’ll burn while exercising. This is why the time-release aspect of N2Burn is so crucial – it doesn’t hit you just drank a six-pack of energy drinks. It provides a clean, focused stimulant effect, with energy that doesn’t go sky-high, then leaves you crashing a few hours later.

Next, we added Naringin to the formula, based on a 1993 study showing that it could extend the effects of caffeine by up to 23%  – again, this was to make our product last longer than the competition. Then we added Mangosteen, another ingredient that we believe acts synergistically with caffeine, by inhibiting certain enzymes that may degrade the caffeine molecule in the bloodstream.

Remember, we wanted this to be a time-released formula…we could have loaded it up with a ton of caffeine, but we didn’t need to, because our other ingredients will extend and amplify its effects, and make it feel like you’re using a much higher dose (but without the jitters). Evodia Rutaecarpa, which not only increases the metabolism of caffeine, but also acts similarly by influencing the secretion of catecholamines, from the adrenal glands and reducing the uptake of fat and increasing the body’s natural rate of burning fat and heat production.

There’s no reason to take a teeth-chattering, insomnia-inducing 400 milligrams of caffeine, when we can take advantage of synergistic ingredients that can make a lower dose work even better.

N2 Phenyl blend:

Phenethylamine (PEA) is an amine found in chocolate, thought to provide the “good” feeling that results from a candy bar – but without the fat gain! It is also an important neurotransmitter and “clean” feeling stimulant that works (*you guessed it) synergistically with caffeine.

But it also works to increase fat loss by stimulating the all-important release of norepinephrine, which is (as you know) a potent lipolytic (fat-burning) hormone. To boost it’s effects, we’ve included two related ingredients: tyramine (4-hydroxy- phenethylamine) and hordinine (N,N-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenylethylamine). Together, these three ingredients act in unison to stimulate fat burning while elevating your mood.  If you’ve never tried PEA before, do yourself a favor and try N2Burn! And even if you’ve tried it, you’ve never tried it with our unique blend of PEA analogues and synergists…

N2 BAT blend:

Originally, it was believed that humans didn’t retain much of their so-called Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) after childhood – which is speculated, in part, to help explain why children have such fast (eat-anything-and-not-get-fat) metabolisms. Babies and infants have large amounts of brown adipose tissue, which is critical to their body’s ability to produce heat.

White fat cells store energy from the food we eat, but brown fat consumes calories to generate body heat. So you can see why we wanted to include something that helps stimulate this tissue. BAT stimulation has been shown to have incredible effects on fat loss, originating at the mitochondrial level; but only recently have those effects been shown to apply to human adults, who (it turns out) have a significant amount of this type of fat.

Green Tea Extract (EGCG) contains polyphenols and catechins, and was shown to significantly boost metabolism in a study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This is thought to be through Brown Adipose Tissue stimulation. Both Undaria pinnatifida (brown seaweed) and Norsynephrine Hydrochloride have been included as well, and both have also been shown to have considerable effects on brown adipose tissue.

N2 Heat blend:

Ever eat spicy food and find that you’re sweating halfway through the meal? Well that’s your body reacting to the spices by increasing thermogenesis, or the rate at which your body produces heat (and burns calories). Capsicum annum, or chili pepper capsinoids are often to blame for this reaction, and that’s exactly why we’ve included it in N2Burn. But not only does it boost your body temperature, it also helps with suppressing the appetite. Think about it: you can’t eat a ton of spicy food, not only because it’s hot, but also because you stop eating sooner. This is because of the appetite suppression found in hot spices. But even better is the fact that capsinoids can not only reduce overall bodyfat, but can also produce a site-specific reduction of abdominal fat.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a mild spice that has been shown to enhance energy metabolism and reduce lipogenesis (body fat accumulation)…even with a high-fat diet. We think this is important because we want people to think about this product for year-round use, not just for getting cut. Think about it: we’ve included a ton of fat-burning ingredients, but also a ton that prevent you from gaining body fat. This way, you can use a lower dose of this product while bulking, and make sure that your gains are lean body mass and not fat.

N2alpha blend:

Alpha receptors are like the traffic cops of fat loss. Without their signal to go, fat loss gets stopped in its tracks. Unfortunately, these receptors are abundant in so-called “problem fat” areas, i.e. the abdomen for men and the hips and thighs for women. Yohimbe hydrochloride and Alpha-Yohimbe (a more potent analog) are alpha-2 receptor antagonists –they deactivate the alpha-2 receptors and allows norepinephrine to mobilize stubborn fat stores. Both of these alkaloids are potent stimulants as well, and help contribute to the overall energy you’ll get from N2Burn.

Unfortunately, not all fat burners contain these alpha-receptor antagonists, which makes other products even more effective if you stack a single pill with your current (non-Alpha-stimulating) fat burner.

N2 Balance blend:

We consider Ashwagandha to be a must-have ingredient in any fat burner. It has been shown in peer-reviewed medical research to elevate T3 and T4 levels, while also lowering markers of oxidative stress, and boosting testosterone at the same time. Research also indicates that it is a potent anabolic compound, and because the body is typically stressed while we’re trying to lose fat, this is very important. One of the first things to go on a diet is optimal thyroid levels, as your body attempts to readjust to a lower caloric intake, to maintain body weight. Testosterone levels also take a beating on a diet, as does performance. Ashwagandha can single-handedly tip the scales from losing muscle instead of fat to burning fat and actually gaining muscle!

If your current fat burner doesn’t include this ingredient, you need to start adding N2Burn into your supplement stack. Whether you’re bulking, or trying to gain muscle while keeping body fat off, this herb is essential to your success.

Finally, to balance the formula out, we included Coffee Arabica, Fenugreek, and R-ALA were added to help with insulin levels. As you probably know, elevated insulin levels can lead to the accumulation of adipose (fat) tissue, so we thought to include several ingredients that aid with insulin management. Coffee Arabica reduces the amount of carbohydrates stored by the body, fenugreek has been shown to favorably alter blood sugar, and R-ALA balances insulin and glucose levels.

And because the thyroid can take a beating while you’re dieting, we’ve added olive leaf, which can elevate active thyroid (T3) levels. And we’ve included N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, which is an epinephrine precursor, but also promotes a healthy thyroid gland, along with the known-thyroid stimulator Diiodotyrosine and gugglesterones. These ingredients will all help you achieve optimal thyroid levels, and therefore, optimal fat loss.

Phytosterol Extract and L-Theanine have both been shown to aid digestion, and because we suggest using this product before meals, we couldn’t imagine not including them. If you recall, the coating of our tablets is Cinnamaldehyde, which helps you eat less and control insulin. Therefore, taken right before a meal, N2Burn will help to curb your appetite, control insulin, and even help digestion – we’ve got you covered from your first bite to your last, whether you’re bulking, cutting, using N2Burn alone or in conjunction with a another fat burner.
